Mobility and movement control often get lumped into the same category, but they are entirely different beasts. Treating them as identical is one of the main reasons people stay stuck in cycles of stiffness or recurring niggles.
Mobility: how far you can move
Mobility refers to the passive range of motion available at a joint, alongside the flexibility of surrounding tissue. Restricted hips or a stiff shoulder show up quickly in everyday movement. Targeted hip mobility exercises and shoulder mobility exercises are common starting points to restore lost range.
Movement control: how well you use that range
Movement control is your ability to actively stabilise and coordinate a joint through its available range. You can have incredible hip range, but if you lack the strength to control it under load, your risk of injury increases significantly.
Why the distinction matters
Adding extra range to an unstable joint creates risk. Conversely, building control on a joint that is structurally blocked yields minimal progress until the underlying restriction is cleared. This is where hands-on manual therapy plays a vital role – releasing tight structures to clear the pathway for active movement.
Mobility exercises for beginners
If you are just starting out, low-load mobility work provides a safe entry point:
- Hip mobility: 90/90 hip switches and controlled 90-degree hip rotations.
- Shoulder mobility: Wall slides and controlled arm circles within a comfortable range.
- General principle: Move slowly through your available range before introducing load or speed.
Building control on top of mobility
Once range is accessible, we layer on control: isometric holds at end-range, slow controlled tempos, and dynamic loaded movements that match your daily activities or gym routine.
